A Bellport woman suspected of DWI with three children in her car was arrested on Oct. 20. Police also say the woman left the children and another passenger in her car after getting into a car accident with another vehicle. Victims of a drunk driver should be aware of their legal right to seek compensation for any damages caused in an accident.
The 43-year-old woman was driving her car west on Montauk Highway. The accident occurred in Patchogue near the corner of North Prospect Avenue. According to police, a witness saw the woman leaving the scene and followed her while calling police. Officers eventually found the woman and claimed she left her 8-year-old daughter, two grandchildren, 4 and 6, and another passenger injured in the car. A passenger from the other vehicle was also injured. They were all treated at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center.
Police arrested the woman and charged her with several crimes including driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident with injury. The woman's arraignment was held the next day at First District Court in Central Islip. A family member took custody of the children after they were released from the hospital.
Unfortunately, despite national campaigns detailing the devastation it can cause, some people continue to drive while intoxicated. The victims should have a full understanding of their legal rights to compensation to help them make informed legal decisions about their case.
